This is a bluehost question posted by jumpjet on 26 August 2007

I would like to offer an .exe file (an installer) as a download, but if I copy the the URL of the file to a browser or post a link on a web page, the file cannot be downloaded. I always get a 403 Permission Denied error.

I do not have any anti-leeching enabled, no passworded folder setting, or htaccess file denying access.

Is there some sort of EXE file blocking carried out by Bluehost which I should be aware of?

If I compress that file and store it in the same folder as a .zip file, there isn’t a problem and the URL link works just fine. The permissions for both files are set the same.

Naturally I don’t want users to run the file from it currently location, just be offered the option to download the file.

I realise the potential dangers of running a remote exe file, is this just a way of preventing it from happening or is there a setting I can change? (MIME perhaps?)
