Bluehost How-To : How to customize awstats the “new way”?

This is a bluehost question posted by vikenk on 11 August 2008

I’ve been having the same problem that many of you have had with awstats showing zero stats thoughout July and August. I’ve contacted BH support, and they told me that my permissions were changed on the awstats conf file and that was preventing them from updating the stats ( I had made it read only). When I changed the permissions back to normal, my stats started re-appearing.

I already knew about the permissions change. When I setup awstats two years ago, I made the stats read-only because BH’s auto updates were always wiping out my custom config file. I had added manual updates and other custom stats to the config file and changed the permissions to prevent them from over-writing my custom config. This has worked without a hitch for two years.

Now, I’m being told by BH that their implementation of awstats has changed. Supposedly, I can no longer have a customized config file. I have to put any customizations in the “custom.txt” file that found in the tmp/awstats folder. They offered no help on how to do this.

Can anyone fill me in on how to do this? That would be great!
