Bluehost : mailbox is NOT full… but reports it is

I have suspected this for some time, but it’s been difficult to prove. Over the last few weeks I’ve had several customers say they sent documents through to me which never arrived. In many instances, they have come back saying my mailbox was full. Each time I have gone in through webmail and checked, the mailbox is empty. I have Thunderbird set to always (automatically) download mail from the server. I upped my mailbox quota several times ( at one stage I made it 100MB for laughs ) but it made no difference.

A couple of weeks ago I had another customer say the same thing – one of his customers sent stuff through and it bounced saying his mailbox was full. I went and checked for him via cpanel, and it showed 0kb usage for all mail accounts on his domain.

Last week my wife’s mail account just completely stopped getting mail altogether ( it’s on the same domain as mine ) for days. I sent test mails from several accounts to no avail, and she too started to get the complaints about mail coming back with the message her mailbox is full. Of course, each time she checked through webmail, it was empty.

Given that I’ve noticed a lot more problems lately with my Bluehost account, (especially the dreaded CPU quota issue that just doesn’t seem to go away) I decided I’d move all the mail and web services over to some Australian based hosting I have – just for my main business domain & mail accounts. Since doing so everything has started working properly – no more “full” mail boxes or missing mail. I even got a whole load of mail come through from 2 days prior – that had obviously been floating around “out there”. Note… I didn’t have anti spam switched on in cpanel… too many false positives and still too much missed spam when I tried it before.

Has anyone else suffered from the same ( mailbox randomly reports full when it clearly isn’t ) issue?
