Has anyone successfully installed SQL Server 2008 Express on a godaddy VPS?

I had a heck of a time just getting the pre-requisites installed, but now the SQL Server install gets all the way to almost the end but the services do not start. The specific error message says:
the dependency service or group failed to start
The error I see in the application event log is:
initerrlog: Could not open error log file ”. Operating system error = 3(The system cannot find the path specified.).
It seems like this is a permissions issue of some kind. I have the services setup to run under a dedicated admin user on the vps. I am missing something but struggling to figure out what it is… anybody else seen these problems?
