Joomla Hosting : Configuration.php Unwriteable & FTP Server

I migrated my joomla site from 1and1 shared hosting to 1and1 virtual private server.

I was able to import the mysql files and upload the joomla files. i manually changed the configuration.php file with my new database info.

But now when I goto the Global Configuration on the back-end of joomla, I can’t make any changes without chmod’ing the configuration.php to 777.

How can I get Joomla to update the configuration.php file and ftp setting?
