The development community over at KDE has already announced the very anticipated KDE 4.0 release. With this new version, the open-source desktop environment is able to represent a very daring and adventurous leap forward for the whole project. It includes a lot of drastic and essential deviations from the older version of the KDE 3.5.x series. There have been significant changes made at almost every level of the desktop stack of KDE, ranging from the user interface to the underlying development architecture.

With the release of KDE 4.0, the Plasma desktop shell has also been introduced. This is able to replace the traditional panel and desktop that has interactive widgets. It also comes with advanced graphical effects and compositing support for the KWin window manager. It also has a new theme engine which is aesthetically sophisticated as well as an icon set called Oxygen which increases the environment’s newest vector-based artwork and visual consistency.

KDE 4.0 has also included a couple of important architectural changes. You can also expect the DCOP interprocess-communication system to be gone, as it has been replaced with D-Bus. D-Bus is a standard IPC framework that was created through a project of FreeDesktop.org. For me, I can say that the adoption of D-Bus by KDE would certainly e a great improvement for the interoperability between GNOME and KDE. There is also the addition of the cross-platform multimedia library of Phonon, as well as the Solid hardware integration framework.

Some other applications that are new to KDE include a new desktop configuration tool and the new Dolphin file manager.
