Strato, Europe’s second largest web hosting company claims that it would run its computer centers completely with renewable energy. The company presently has 30,000 dedicated servers which will, along with the matrix web hosting platform, be completely carbon dioxide free from January 2008 onwards. The company’s carbon emissions are expected to be reduced by about 15,000 tons per annum.
The company has worked with AMD and Sun Microsystems to create such systems saving upto 90 percent of of energy compared to the previous system. A highly efficient air cooling system was developed by working with University of Berlin. NaturEnergie AG, a German company will supply hydro electrical power to Strato to help completing its carbon neutral plan. The company maintains that the prices for its customers will not be hiked as the company has managed to offset the effect of expensive renewal energy.
