I have been debating between SM and 1and1 for about a month now to start my own webhost and sell various voice servers as well as put my own websites and goodies and gaming servers on some servers. Well I won’t be establishing a business for some months now, but I would like to purchase the server for my own stuff atleast and learn some of the stuff.

I do, however, have a few questions, which are really just nebie linux questions, but hopefully all the folks at SM with experience can ease my mind.

1) I need some experienced input about which server and options. I am looking at the SuperServer 2.8 P4 w/ HT, 1GB RAM, 200GB HD, and Plesk. Will this setup be able to sustain an Americas Army gameserver of 20 players, a TeamSpeak daemon running multiple servers with total of about 100 users, and many PHP/MySQL dependent websites?

2) What would be better for ease of use, but having less problems? Using up2date or compiling from source in RHE?

3) Is it worth $10/month extra for a 100Mbps uplink? Will it speed up connectivity to internet any more or is the extra speed pretty much just for inter-connectivity between “in-house” servers?

4) If I were to get a 2nd HD, what would be the best way to partision system? I was told to put /usr and /var on the 2nd HD as to speed up MySQL queries, and keep the gaming server off of the main HD. Would this method be good?

5) What is Private VLAN?
