Hostgator and Bluehost are our best webhosts and godaddy.com is the best domain registrar.

This web hosting thread started by Chirieac on 08 December 2008

I’ve recently purchased a domain name (a few hours ago) from namecheap.com and I’ve come here to tell my experience with them.

How I’ve found them…

I am a beginner in web design and I wanted to buy my own host and stop using free hosting. I’ve start searching for host providers and I’ve found the next popular sites: bluehost, hostmonster and hostgator.
I must say I’ve was very excited when I saw that they offer one free domain name and “unlimited” stuff like UNLIMITED Hosting Space and UNLIMITED Site Bandwidth. Since their prices are pretty much the same I didn’t knew which one to chose for my hosting needs.
So I’ve start to search in google which one is better. And this way I’ve found about so many complaints from users about bluehost/hostmonster (I’ve heard that they are the same company) and hostgator (well not so many complaints like the other two and some users here on webhostingtalk had a nice expericence with hostgator).
And, finally, I’ve found that is better to buy a domain name separate from the host, since some hosts will take your domain name if you leave them.

My first number one choice for a domain name registrar was godaddy since is so widely use. I’ve tried to buy from them with an unverified paypal account and it didn’t worked. Apparently godaddy wants a verified paypal account so that he can take money from you account without your permissions.
I’m glad that it didn’t worked. This way I’ve found that even godaddy is no “saint” (many no-nos) when I’ve searched for other alternatives. My choices for alternatives was moniker.com and namecheap.com.
I’ve choosed namecheap beacause I’ve heard that is easier with them to control your domain.

My experience with them…

So, I’ve purchased from them my domain for $8.81/yr with the help of a coupon code. They accept unverified paypal accounts.
Since I don’t have a payed host yet I’ve created an account at awardspace.com for a free hosting to test my domain. After just a few clicks I was able to tell namespace to redirect my domain name to the DNSs of my awardspace account. I must say that all the options for your domanin is easy to set in namecheap, just a few clicks.
Happy that I was able to buy and configure my domain name very easy in a short amount of time, I’ve went to sleep…
After 5 hours (when I woked up) my domain name was already pointing to my free awardspace host. Oh, Happy day!

But wait…

After I’ve saw my domain name in all it’s glory I’ve start to have doubts if my domain has the best name possible.I’ve choosed a name that was in a plural form and now I wanted to change it to singular name (to remove just the final ’s’).
Since I didn’t knew if I can rename my domain I’ve tried to contact namecheap. Luckily they support tickets to contact them.
Here’s my question to them:

“Hello! I think I’ve choosed the wrong name for my domain name. I’ve paid for it for 3 years and I can afford to buy another domain name. Is there a way to my problem?”

And after just 8 minutes (do you believe their fast customer support?!) I’ve got this:

“Please note we are not able to ‘rename’ domains, but we can delete and refund com, net, org registrations under the following conditions:

- domain must be registered not more than 72 hours ago;
- we will charge USD0.99 service fee;
- all refunds will be done to the NameCheap account (i.e. you will not get refunded to your credit card or Paypal account).

Please let us know URGENTLY if the above is acceptable for you.
