I figured I’d ask my question here, before I start burning bridges with AT&T. This mostly about power issues in the datacenter.
To give some background, my company uses AT&T Enterprise Hosting. This was originally set up 2 years ago and none of the people that worked on the contract are still with the company. So far my experience with their customer service has been nothing short of awful. But I digress.
I do have a limited expertise in power, so please correct me if I am not understanding something correctly.
I have a relatively small cage, with 5 racks, 2 of them are empty. There are 2 Circuits (redundant), each with 4 L6-30 connectors and 1 L5-20. I have additional equipment coming in and I’ve asked them about a possibility of additional connectors and to provide me the info on what we currently have. It took 3 weeks to just give me any kind of answer and not before I emailed about 8 people.
Anyway, they performed a power audit as apparently they had no idea what type of power was going to the cage. In a nutshell, 4 L6-30 connectors (or 2 per circuit) are not used at all and have 0 draw. The rest has a draw of 8.5kw, which results in 88w/sf or so.
Their response is that I can’t put any additional equipment in the rack, because I will go beyond their regulations of watts per sf. They cannot (will not) put me in touch with a technical resource. They suggest that I either double my space or use their managed services instead of buying equipment. Both suggestions seem fairly ridiculous. Why get more cage space, when I am not utilizing what I have already? And the last thing I want to do is get managed services from a company that has repeatedly demonstrated complete incompetence and ridiculous customer service. In any case I am not looking for any managed services at all, but especially not from them.
